James II 1685-88

James II (1633-1701) was the last Catholic monarch of England, Scotland and Ireland, ruling through just 4 years.

He was deemed to be too pro-Catholic, and national tensions soon reached the point whereby his son-in-law, William III of Orange, invaded from the Netherlands in the ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688, leading to James’ abdication.

He was married twice, firstly to Anne Hyde then to Mary of Modena, an Italian princess.

After abdicating, he lived in France sponsored by his cousin Louis IV.
